Play Therapy

Play therapy provides children with a safe, healthy outlet to release and resolve painful and difficult feelings, thoughts, and experiences in a harmless manner. It helps children charge up their emotional batteries, channel aggressive energy, release tension, resolve internal conflict, and heal from stress and trauma. Play therapy also helps children with attention and social difficulties develop executive function skills, cooperative play, and emotional regulation.

Play therapy has been shown to be beneficial with children of all ages and for addressing multiple issues including but not limited to, behavioral problems, Speech-Language Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, trauma, childhood chronic pain, depression and anxiety.

“You can discover more about a person in one hour of play than in a year of conversation.” – Plato

In my work with children, I use a variety of play-based approaches including:

  • Attachment play therapy
  • Non-directive child-centered play therapy
  • Directive or Symbolic play therapy

Research has shown that aggressive children benefit from non-directive child-centered play therapy. When children seek to be close to others but have a lot of anger built up inside, their efforts to be close physically may come out as aggressive behavior such as hitting, pushing and falling on their parents. These children need a way to release anger that have built up inside before they are ready to be close in a more gentle way with others. Play therapy provides that outlet for them to release those intense emotions safely without hurting anyone.
