Child & Adolescent Therapy

I help children and adolescents develop confidence and important developmental, social, communication, and emotional regulation skills.

Children and adolescents are faced with many pressures from school, peers, family, and society. As a result, many children and teenagers may find themselves feeling stressed, depressed, and anxious. The most common anxiety disorders seen in children and adolescents are separation anxiety, social anxiety, specific phobia, and generalized anxiety disorder. Left untreated, anxiety can significantly impact social, academic, and family functioning and increase the risk of developing other mental health disorders in adult life, including depression and substance abuse disorder.

Children and adolescents may not have the words to express that they are anxious. Instead their anxiety may manifest behaviorally through acting out, having a lot of physical complaints, doing poorly academically, or school refusal. Parents and teachers might see these behaviors as defiance or attention seeking and fail to recognize that it is anxiety driven.

Among the many daily challenges of being a child and adolescent, body image, perfectionism, fear of failure, bullying, and fitting in are also common concerns for many children and adolescents, which can often lead to educational problems and depression.

I have a deep understanding of child development and childhood disorders. I utilize a broad range of therapy techniques to deliver treatment that includes talk, play and art therapy. Parent or caregiver involvement and parenting support is an important part of child and adolescent therapy.
